SHOW MUST RIDE ON

They say Freddie never needed a road to have an audience.

But there’s a story old bikers like to tell.

After a concert, sometime in the early hours of the morning, Freddie came across a small group of bikers at a gas station. They weren’t fans. At least, not that night. They were simply men and women of the road, covered in denim, leather and miles.

Freddie walked over to one of the bikes and stood there for a few seconds, looking at it.

— That’s quite a machine.

One of the bikers replied:

— It’s not the machine. It’s where it takes you.

Freddie smiled.

The next morning, a black chopper appeared outside the studio.

Nobody knew where it came from.

For a few months, between rehearsals, concerts and nights that ended far too late, Freddie began disappearing down the open roads alone.

No stage. No band. No crowd.

Just him, the machine and the silence.

They say that’s when he realised something:

A road can be a stage too.

The difference is, on the road, nobody is waiting for you to put on a show.

You just have to be yourself.

Years later, among the fictional members of an old British Motorcycle Club, the story still goes around that Freddie had a seat reserved for him at the bar — even when he was on the other side of the Atlantic.

Above that seat, someone once wrote on the wall:

SHOW MUST RIDE ON.

Nobody ever dared to erase it.
